Cover types explained

Comprehensive vs Third Party

Comprehensive cover, Third Party Fire & Theft, and Third Party Only are the three main car insurance cover types in South Africa. The right one depends on your vehicle value, whether it is financed, your driving environment, and how much risk you are willing to carry yourself.

What is Comprehensive Car Insurance?

Comprehensive car insurance is the broadest cover available in South Africa. It can pay for accident damage to your own vehicle, theft, hijacking, fire, weather damage, and third-party claims against you — subject to policy terms.

If your vehicle is financed, the bank almost always requires comprehensive cover until the loan is settled. Comprehensive premiums typically range from R450 to R2,500 per month depending on the vehicle, driver profile, and area risk.

What is Third Party Fire and Theft?

Third Party Fire and Theft covers loss of your vehicle from theft, hijacking or fire, plus third-party damages you cause to other vehicles or property. It does not cover accident damage to your own vehicle.

This cover suits owners of mid-value vehicles who want theft protection without the premium cost of comprehensive cover. Premiums are typically 30-50% lower than comprehensive cover for the same vehicle.

What is Third Party Only?

Third Party Only is the cheapest car insurance available in South Africa. It pays third parties for damage you cause but does not cover your own vehicle, theft, or fire.

It suits owners of lower-value or paid-off vehicles who can afford to replace the car if it is written off or stolen. Premiums are typically R150 to R400 per month.

Which Cover Type Should You Choose?

If your vehicle is financed, the bank decides — comprehensive is non-negotiable. If your vehicle is paid off and worth more than R150,000, comprehensive is usually still worth it. If your vehicle is worth less than R80,000 and you can replace it from savings, third party only may be enough.
