Roadside assistance

Also known as: road assist, emergency roadside, breakdown cover

Quick definition

A benefit that sends help when your car breaks down or you are stranded — jump-starts, flat-tyre changes, locksmith, fuel delivery and towing to the nearest repairer. Often included free on comprehensive policies, sometimes sold as a paid add-on.

Understanding Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance covers the everyday mishaps that are not accidents but still leave you stuck: a flat battery, a puncture with no usable spare, keys locked in the car, running out of fuel, or a mechanical breakdown. One phone call dispatches a service provider, and a tow to the nearest approved repairer is usually included up to a set distance.

Many South African comprehensive policies bundle a basic roadside benefit at no extra cost, while standalone or enhanced plans add medical assistance, a home emergency service, or longer tow distances. Because cover is often already included, the common mistake is paying twice — check your schedule before buying a separate plan.

It is a convenience-and-safety benefit rather than a financial-protection one, but on South African roads — where a breakdown in the wrong place at the wrong time is a genuine safety concern — the value is in getting help quickly from a vetted provider rather than flagging down a stranger.
